The Bookshop

Website design and WooCommerce integration

The Project

The largest second-hand bookshop in Scotland, The Bookshop has been made internationally famous by Shaun Bythell and his hilarious diaries about the real life of bookselling.

After building the original website for The Bookshop in 2001, we were given the job of updating the site to bring it up to date in 2020. The brief was to create a website to allow Shaun and the team at The Bookshop to sell their extensive inventory online.

Our Role

The website needed to be friendly and engaging, encouraging customers to browse and buy books on the new website. The front covers of Shaun’s international bestsellers ‘The Diary of a Bookseller’ and ‘Confessions of a Bookseller’ both have a very illustrative covers, and so we wanted to tie that into the website design. The concrete pillars outside the front of the shop provided inspiration for the footer, as well as the logo.

Books were sold on the original website via Abe Books, which enabled visitors to search the shop’s inventory and buy books via a widget on the site. The new website was updated to include its own eCommerce platform using WooCommerce, which meant that the bookshop could manage and update their stock inventory manually.

The Result

The new website enables users to easily search the shop’s inventory and easily shop from their extensive range of books. The site design conveys a clean, quaint, friendly shopping experience, mirroring the welcoming environment of a bookshop.
