Gretna Green

Sharing in one of the Greatest Love Stories of all Times

Work: Gretna Green

The Brief

Gretna Green has been one of Scotland’s greatest love stories since 1754. They have a fascinating history and rich, long lasting family connection, remaining the centrepiece of thousands of new love stories every year, and so we wanted to find a way to incorporate this enchanting romance into their new visual identity and digital presence.

The group have a broad audience to reach, with a new world-leading visitor experience, exhibitions, gift shops, great food and a range of three and four star accommodation available on site.

The current Gretna Green brand is well established and is in use across multiple touch points and we wanted to support the established brand and how much legacy stood alongside the organisation’s work.

Our Approach

We worked alongside the existing brand guidelines to solidify the visual identity of Gretna Green ltd and bring all the elements of their work together into a striking visual identity that would lead the group into their exciting future development.

Overall, our aim was to ensure that the online and digital presence of the brand was consistent with all other aspects of the visual identity. This consistency helps users experience a seamless and cohesive journey across all touch points in a group as large as the Gretna Green brand, building trust and enhancing their overall engagement with the brand.

As part of the design, our aim was to use typography to craft relationships between words, subtly enhancing the brand while reflecting Gretna Green’s rich history, as a place that romantically brings people together. Our goal was to effectively combine both words and imagery wherever possible to convey this message.

In developing the themes around the promotion of the hotel and their ‘Coorie’ style, we incorporated photography that captured more than just the rooms, we featured people enjoying the ‘Coorie’ lifestyle, like curling up with a coffee and a book under a cosy throw. This attention to detail creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that an empty hotel room just couldn’t achieve.

As part of the development of the new visual identity, we wanted to support the roll out of the new design elements creating everything from customisable templates for Wedding Packages and Events as well as standard, easily populated page templates to allow Gretna Green’s in house team to organically grow their content and create new processes in line with the brand.
