Dementia Inclusive Singing Network

Creating a dementia friendly website for Luminate Scotland.

The Project

Towards the end of 2019 Creatomatic were invited to tender for a completely new website project for Luminate, Scotland’s creative ageing organisation. Luminate works year round to develop and deliver creative activities with and for older people, and had recently been awarded funding to set up a Dementia Inclusive Singing Network.

The aim, to offer support to choirs across Scotland to ensure that people living with dementia and their carers have the opportunity to sing in a choir in their local area.

Our Role

The network were looking for a website to support the aims of the project in:

  • Providing advice and support for new and existing choirs
  • Creating a resource for people living with dementia and their carers to find information about dementia inclusive singing groups in their local community
  • Hosting and providing links to training and resources for choir leaders and organisers
  • Enabling connections between existing choirs and choir leaders to share experiences and skills
Fortunately, our designer Zoe has previous experience of designing for people with dementia as part of her Masters Degree – a great opportunity to put her skills into practice and the perfect fit for a unique project.

While the group’s target audiences include professionals, volunteers and carers, Luminate were also keen to stress that the website should function as an engaging and accessible resource for people living with dementia looking to join a choir.

It was vital that the website was designed with a dementia-inclusive approach, involving the input of people living with dementia at every stage of the process, through development, design, and user testing.

The Result

Layout, navigation, colour and contrast, text and language, fonts and spacing, images and audio-visual content were all key considerations for Zoe in the design process.

Focus groups were used to gauge response and test the designs, with feedback positive across the board – a really interesting process, invaluable to the success of the project.

This was certainly a new one for the team, with some extremely useful takeaways for future projects. Excited to hear how the network grows over time, good luck guys!
